Deputies: Man shoots ex-girlfriend, commits suicide

A Sevier County woman is in critical condition, after authorities say she was shot in the face by her estranged boyfriend. He then turned the gun on himself.

The shooting happened late Thursday night at a home on Bent Road in the Kodak community.

A witness told investigators that Browning Burgess, 69, of Newport, came to the home to talk to Audrey M. McCroskey, 46. The two argued, then Burgess shot McCroskey in the bedroom. He then came back into the living room, where he shot himself.

Sevier County High School honors veterans with show

(WBIR) Sevier County High School students put on a performance for veterans of all ages Friday morning.

Fifty military personnel came out to watch a spirited variety show put on by the color guard, band, choir and dancers ahead of Veterans Day. Veterans Day is November 11.

Some roads in Smokies reopen after record snowfall

Some roads in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park are back open after Saturday's record-breaking snowfall.

The park reports Laurel Creek Road is accessible from the Townsend Wye to Cades Cove Loop Road, which also reopened.

Little River Road is open from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Elkmont Road, but remains closed from Elkmont Road to the Townsend Wye.

Hiker hurt by falling tree in the Smokies

Rangers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park rescued an injured hiker after a tree fell on him Saturday morning in the Greenbrier area.

The call came in to park dispatchers at 11:30 a.m.

Friends hiking with Roger Fender, 51, of Franklin, Tenn. when they say a tree limb about a foot wide fell on him from at least 60 feet.

Fender suffered several broken bones.

His friends lifted the limb up and helped pull him out while a litter team hiked to the site.
