Signs of the season: Christmas retail hits the shelves

As cooler weather moves into Tennessee, the first signs of Christmas aren't far behind.

In Gatlinburg, scarecrows and pumpkins sit next to Santas and snowmen. Christmas is still more than two months away, but the ads have already hit TV and the retail world is ready for early shoppers.

Stacy Gore, visiting from Georgia with her family, said it's an early reminder of an already stressful season.

"We don't want to see Christmas, we can't afford Christmas!" she laughed.

The Gatlinburg Craftsmen Fair is a popular destination for holiday shoppers. Wednesday night, vendors were unloading their products in preparation for opening day.

Cheryl Greenfield is a regular at the fair, selling her own painted crafts in addition to pieces by her mother and sister.

"A lot of people know me by my painting of my snowmen," she said, pointing to her collection.

The Ohio artist says she is looking forward cooler temperatures and the holiday season, after an uncomfortably hot summer.

"That will be nice. I'm ready for that!"

Greenfield's booth features plenty of Christmas items, as well as fall decorations.

The fair, which features 200 booths of hand-made products, runs October 11- 29 at the Gatlinburg Convention Center.
