United Way of Sevier County continues to face financial troubles. The chapter says it will close unless it gets major support.

Now, the county's mayor is starting an effort to save the chapter.

Mayor Larry Waters says he's working to bring community leaders together to see if there's a way forward for the United Way. Waters says so far, the people he's talked with want to find a way to help. They're working to set a meeting date for sometime in October.

19 local organizations currently receive funding from the Sevier County chapter.

This board decision comes on the heels of an announcement that executive director, Tom Newman, is stepping down.

The money collected will provide increased customer service for backcountry trip planning, reservations, permits and the backcountry experience

Sevier Co. United Way says it will have to close without more support

The Sevier County chapter of the United Way says it will shut its doors unless it receives major financial support. It made the announcement Wednesday following the resignation of its executive director.

The board of the Sevier County chapter says it has faced difficult challenges in recent years, and now it does not have enough money to keep funding the 19 organizations it serves beyond the end of this year.

Some of those organizations include the Boys and Girls Club, Child and Family Tennessee, Boy and Girl Scouts, and the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department.

Wonders of Flight sets sail Friday

Sevier County's newest tourist attraction gives visitors a new way to view the Smokies. Wonders of Flight opens to the public Friday.

The tethered helium balloon attraction was originally supposed to open this summer, but as we reported in June, a world-wide helium shortage delayed the grand opening.

The balloon will float people 400 feet in the air for an elevated view of the Great Smoky Mountains.
