Gatlinburg makes progress on beautification project

Gatlinburg continues to make progress on a project to make the city more beautiful nearly 20 years after it started. The project dates back to 1992 when workers began putting power lines underground.

Crews have been putting electrical, telephone and cable lines underground to keep utility poles and lines off the Parkway. There are also brand new planters, benches and trash cans.

The city now says the section of the Parkway from the Gatlinburg Convention Center to the boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park includes those upgraded features.

Work on that section began last August.

The city and Gatlinburg businesses have invested about $24 million in the project.
