Crews started working early Thursday morning to clear damage left by a rock slide in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Park officials closed Laurel Creek Road Wednesday evening after the slide happened at 5 p.m., west of Schoolhouse Gap, about five miles west of the Townsend Wye intersection with Little River Road.

The slide covered the westbound lane and is about 50 feet in length. Crews closed the entire road so they can remove about 200 cubic yards of material, which includes trees and several large rocks.

Cades Cove Loop Road has also been closed this week so crews can remove hazardous trees. The park hopes to reopen that road Friday.
