(WBIR - Sevier County) Clingmans Dome Road is back open after it had to be closed for several hours Tuesday due to a rock slide.

Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park said several large boulders, including some nearly the size of cars, blocked the inbound lane Tuesday morning.

The park needed to close the road to give them enough room to bring in equipment and remove the rock slide materials.

(WBIR) Crews are working to clean up a rock slide that occurred Tuesday morning on Clingmans Dome Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Officials got notified shortly before 8:30 a.m. about the incident.

Rangers closed down the popular route after assessing the situation. Officials said several large boulders, including some nearly the size of cars, blocked the inbound lane.

The park said its contracting equipment to break up the boulders. That's expected to arrive Tuesday afternoon and the work should be completed by Wednesday.

According to a release, the road closure is necessary to give them enough room to remove the rock slide materials.
