Pigeon Forge Primary among SCORE finalists

SCORE is out with its 12 finalists for the second annual SCORE prize award.

Each year, one elementary, middle and high school, along with one school district in Tennessee receive the award for the most dramatically improved student achievement.

Some East Tennessee schools are among the finalists. They include John Sevier Elementary in Maryville and Pigeon Forge Primary in Sevier County.

Hamblen and Maryville are both finalists for best district. Maryville won that title last year.

Individual school winners will get $10,000. The winning district will get $25,000.

As many high school seniors begin to prepare for college, one local scholarship program is gearing up for a higher number of applicants this year.

"tnAchieves" provides assistance to public school students who continue their education at a community college. In East Tennessee, those schools include Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, and Walter State Community college.

The "last dollar" scholarship provides funds to cover whatever tuition costs remain after financial aid and other scholarships.
