Snow tubing season starting in Smokies

Snow tubing season starting in Smokies

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- Add Smoky Mountain snow tubing to the list of things improved by new technology.

Ober Gatlinburg is set to open its snow tubing runs on Friday. The Gatlinburg company, which has offered skiing in Tennessee for 50 years, said the opening is earlier than usual and the first of this season in the Southeast.

According to a news release, Ober Gatlinburg's new snow-making process doesn't require temperatures below freezing. That allowed the resort to begin creating white stuff for its runs on the last day of summer, Sept. 21.

You can hit the slopes of Ober Gatlinburg by the end of the week, but you'll have to travel on a tube instead of skis or boards.

Ober announced Tuesday that it will open its snow tubing season on Friday, November 16.  Officials say it will be the first tubing operation to open in the Southeast this year.

Using new technology, the resort was able to begin making snow on September 21 and plans to operate tubing through Easter.

Now it's November, and Mizzou fans are here in Knoxville.

"It was about an 11 or 12 hour drive. 677 miles from home to here," Mizzou fan Ed Kays said.

His RV got just 7 mpg on the trip to Tennessee.

"One of the most demanding, both physically and mentally, experiences of my life," Ainsworth said.
