Biggest October snowfall on record in Newfound Gap, and still snowing

Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park believe this is the biggest snowfall on record for the month of October.

So far, 14-16 inches of snow has fallen at Newfound Gap, which is right at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line.  There are snow drifts about four feet deep, and winds around 35 mph.

Newfound Gap usually receives about 4 inches of snow this time of year, so this is very out of the ordinary.

No park visitors can enjoy the scenery at Newfound Gap right now, however, because the road to area is closed.

Thin line between Sandy rain and snow keeps road crews busy

The potential for piles of snow in the higher elevations of East Tennessee from Superstorm Sandy kept road crews busy Tuesday.  That includes Cocke County where the highway department maintains 700 miles of roads, many of which are in mountainous areas.

Superstorm Sandy is causing flight delays and cancellations throughout the country.

So far, more than 15,000 flights have been cancelled and in Knoxville, we are seeing the effects.

Robin Vanleigh is sort of lucky, "I'm going from here to Chicago to Phoenix."

She's not headed to the Northeast, but she's still worried about her flight plan.

"So far, everything is on time, but since I am flying into Chicago and Sandy is making her way closer and closer, I am getting a little concerned that I might get stuck there," explained Robin.

It's safe to say that one of the most beautiful places on earth right now is the top of Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Located at an elevation of 6400 feet, well over a foot of snow has already fallen on the mountain top, and it's still coming down.

Allyson Virden, one of the caretakers of the LeConte Lodge, maintains a blog where she is posting pictures and updates.

The beautiful fall colors make this one of the busiest weekends of the year for the Great Smoky Mountains.  As the fall colors turn, so do millions of wheels into Sevier County and the national park.

With all of the tourists comes chronic congestion, especially at the 407 exit of Interstate 40.  On Friday afternoon exiting traffic was backed up four miles on I-40 East.

TDOT, public discuss safety changes to Chapman Highway

An East Tennessee road notorious for dangerous, even fatal accidents, could soon be the subject of safety improvements.

Thursday night, TDOT officials held a public forum to discuss changes to Chapman Highway.

"There was a corridor study done back in 2007, and we've been actively looking at spot locations since then where we could add turn lanes or do those low-cost safety improvements," said TDOT District 1 Assistant Regional Director Amanda Snowden.

She listed ideas of public interest, including rumble strips and additional traffic signals.

Some members of Cedar Grove Baptist Church spent Thursday afternoon writing thank-you notes.

They've had to order new cards in the past few weeks simply to keep up with their responses to the dozens of cards, condolence letters and donations they've received recently.

"That's one of the things that has helped us - so many people are thinking about Cedar Grove Baptist Church now who didn't even know where we were before," Pastor Bob Lynch said.
